How to Stop, Start, Move Service

Start New Service

To start new natural gas service, please notify our Customer Service Inquiry Center at 1-800-221-0051, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at least ten (10) business days before you move in. In the case of a weekend or holiday, please select the next business day. Appointments are scheduled in the order they are received.

When you call it is important to have the following information ready:

  • Date requested. **
  • Time requested.  State either AM or PM preference only. **
  • Your daytime and evening phone number.
  • Instructions on how to access the property. Access is needed to read the meter to open an account in your name. Also, if service has been turned off, access must be provided to all gas appliances. For safety measures, a trained NJNG employee must enter your home and light all appliances. There must be someone over the age of 18 available to allow our employee to gain entry.
  • MAKE SURE THE WATER AND ELECTRIC ARE ON BEFORE SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT WITH NJNG.

** While we do our best to accommodate requests, we can’t guarantee that the date and time you request will be available. We’ll contact you via e-mail to confirm your scheduled date to turn your gas service on.

A $15.00 "account opening" charge will appear on your first bill after the service is turned on. We may request a security deposit if satisfactory credit has not been established. Each month your bill will include a minimal customer charge for service related costs, such as bill processing and customer service, even if no actual natural gas is used.
