NJNG makes every attempt to make certain your experience with us is exceptional. This includes the accuracy of your bill ... that is why we obtain actual meter reads on a monthly basis.
The importance of an actual read is to ensure that you are paying for the exact amount of natural gas you used. It eliminates the need for an estimated bill. There are two ways we obtain an actual read: Automated Meter Reading (AMR) devices and reads obtained by our employees. Regardless of the manner in which your meter is read, we ask that you provide safe and clear access for our employees. This means trimming your shrubs or restraining your dog while our meter readers visit your property.
Automated Meter Reading
If you live in Monmouth County, you should have an AMR device. With this device, your natural gas meter can be read remotely by our employees as they walk or drive by your home or business. We will only need access to your property if the meter requires maintenance.
Meters Read Manually
Customers who live in either Ocean and Morris Counties have meters that are read manually. If the meter is in your house or inaccessible, please call us at 800-221-0051 to make special arrangements. If we cannot obtain a read, we will leave a form for you to complete. It will provide instructions regarding how to read your meter.
There may be instances when we are unable to read your meter. In those instances, your bill will be calculated using an estimated read. The estimate is based on past usage and is adjusted for weather conditions. Once we receive the next actual read, any overcharge or undercharge will be corrected the following month. This means we always bill you for the natural gas you actually use.
Submit Your Own Meter Read or Find Your Next Scheduled Reading
If you want to avoid an estimated read, you can read your own meter. Simply submit your read and be sure it reaches us by the next scheduled reading date. The upper left-hand side of your bill displays this information in a box labeled "next scheduled reading." Here are the step-by-step instructions for submitting your read:

- Click Meter Read from the left side of the navigation screen
- Click Submit My Meter Read from the left side of the navigation screen
- Complete the form and hit Submit
All Other Customers
- Provide both your meter read and account number
- E-mail the information to CustomerService@njng.com
- Phone us at 800-221-0051 (follow prompts 3, 2)
- Fax the information to 732-905-4366
When in Doubt: Ask to see a Company Photo ID
All our employees are required to prominently display their company photo ID; so if you do not see it, please feel free to ask. If you're in doubt about the identity of someone claiming to be an NJNG employee, call us at 800-221-0051. If you feel threatened, call 911.
