Tips to Reduce Your Company’s Energy Costs
Energy can be a significant component of your company’s operating expense. Wasteful or inefficient operation can directly impact your bottom line. What can you do to reduce energy use--and maximize savings?
- Install or use existing programmable thermostats or energy management systems.
- Keep external windows and doors closed. Close curtains, shades, or blinds at night to retain heat. On sunny days, take advantage of the heat from the sun.
- Seal off unused areas of the building. This reduces heating requirements in those areas.
- Perform routine and regular maintenance of mechanical equipment.
- Replace or clean air filters.
- Install an outside temperature reset.
- Replace your heating equipment with properly sized high-efficiency units.
- Lower your hot water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit when applicable.
- Insulate hot water tanks and pipes.
- Replace your old water heater with high-efficiency models with an Energy Factor of 62 percent or greater (85 percent or greater on larger systems).
- Consider installing a properly sized, high-efficiency, dedicated water heater if you utilize a heating boiler for your domestic hot water.
Commercial Cooking Equipment
- Cook wisely; use the most efficient appliances for the task at hand.
- Reduce the amount of idle and preheat time. Implement a start up and shutdown plan to ensure that only the required appliances are operating.
- Maintain and repair all kitchen equipment. Everyday wear and tear such as leaky gaskets, clogged burners and loose hinges can add up to be major sources of energy losses.
- Recalibrate thermostats and temperature controls of kitchen equipment to ensure you’re cooking at the right temperature.
- When replacing kitchen equipment, think about the lifecycle cost rather than the first cost. Buy the most efficient piece of equipment that you can. When buying fryers, holding cabinets or steamers look for the ENERGY STAR label.
- Install a gas booster water heater to meet your high temperature/sterilization dishwashing requirements.
- Check for worn or cracked caulking and weather stripping on all doors, windows and other building penetrations.
- Seal all duct work.
- Consider retrofitting your roof insulation to a rigid R-30 panel or adding insulation up to a R-49 value to your attic.
- Consider insulating your walls to a R-18 insulation value if no insulation exists.
