At NJNG, your safety is our highest priority.

Whether you’re at home, work or in a public place, it’s likely you’re in an area served by the 2.4 million miles of pipelines that safely deliver natural gas to almost 70 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the United States. In fact, according to the United States Department of Transportation, pipelines are the safest form of energy transportation.

NJNG works with industry leaders, peer groups and regulators to continually improve our pipeline safety operations, including design and construction techniques, inspection programs and workforce instruction. We conduct extensive training and periodic drills with emergency responders and state and local agencies to test procedures, logistics and communications, and ensure emergency plans are in place. And, as an active member of New Jersey One Call, NJNG participates in widespread public education programs to promote safe digging practices.

All of these efforts allow NJNG and the natural gas industry to continue to safely deliver clean, energy-efficient natural gas every day.

We will bring this same commitment to safety to the SRL. NJNG follows the most stringent federal and state design standards for projects such as this. Whether the infrastructure is located in a rural area or downtown metropolitan area, NJNG designs, constructs and operates all of its systems to the same high standard and focus on safety.

To ensure safety and reliability, the SRL will be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week in our natural gas control room at our Wall, New Jersey headquarters. Remotely controlled valves will be installed along the project, giving NJNG the ability to shut down the flow of natural gas, if necessary.

Once operational, we will conduct a leak survey of the entire SRL every year, and perform physical inspections of the full route each month. A system will also be installed to protect the SRL from corrosion, which will be regularly inspected. Periodically, a proactive, in-line inspection will be completed to assess the SRL’s integrity from the inside out. And, whenever third-party excavation is proposed in the vicinity of the SRL, our personnel will be on site to monitor any activity as necessary to protect its integrity.

Additionally, federal regulations require us to have effective Emergency Response and Operating and Maintenance Procedures in place. We continually review and revise our emergency plans, keep them current and ensure state, county and local emergency management personnel are familiar with our system. Furthermore, we work closely with emergency responders and local officials in our communities to ensure safety and prevent and prepare for emergencies.
