Notice of Public Hearing

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) will conduct a public hearing for the purpose of receiving comments from the public regarding New Jersey Natural Gas’ (NJNG) petitions to install and operate the Southern Reliability Link (SRL). The SRL is an approximate 30-mile pipeline designed to strengthen NJNG’s overall system and provide increased reliability, resiliency and supply diversity. The public hearing will be held at the following time and location:

Wednesday, August 26, 2015, 6 p.m.
The Enterprise Center
Rowan College at Burlington County
3331 Route 38
Mt. Laurel, N.J. 08054

A representative of the BPU will preside at the hearing. The public is invited to attend and interested persons will be permitted to testify and/or make a statement of their views on the proposed petitions. Interested parties may also submit comments regarding the petitions to the attention of the Honorable Irene Kim Asbury, Secretary, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, 44 South Clinton Street, 9th Floor, P.O. Box 350, Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0350. Comments, if any, should be identified with the heading In the Matter of the Petition of New Jersey Natural Gas Company for Approval and Authorization to Construct and Operate the Southern Reliability Link Pursuant to N.J.A.C. 14:7-1.4, Docket No. GE15040402.; In the Matter of the Petition of New Jersey Natural Gas Company for a Determination Concerning Southern Reliability Link Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:55D-19 and N.J.S.A. 48:9-25.4”, Docket No. GO15040403.

About the Southern Reliability Link

Superstorm Sandy was the most devastating storm to ever hit our state. The damage to New Jersey’s shore communities, especially in Monmouth and Ocean counties, was unlike anything experienced in our history. If the lessons from Superstorm Sandy have taught us anything, it is the critical need for system reliability and resiliency.

The proposed Southern Reliability Link (SRL) is being developed to support the safe, reliable, resilient distribution of natural gas to our customers. The SRL will provide a major interstate connection between New Jersey Natural Gas’ (NJNG) distribution system that serves customers in Ocean, Burlington and Monmouth counties and the interstate pipeline system adjacent to the New Jersey Turnpike. By reinforcing the supply of natural gas with a feed from a separate interstate supplier into the southern end of NJNG’s system, the SRL will help mitigate potential customer interruptions, enhance system resiliency and ensure safe, reliable natural gas service for the region.

The SRL will also strengthen the reliability and resiliency of the natural gas distribution system that serves the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (Joint Base) and supports its critical mission. Additionally, the SRL will allow the Joint Base to access natural gas in locations closer to its facilities, thereby making it more economical. This creates opportunities for the Joint Base to install equipment that is more efficient and reduce operating expenses with low-cost natural gas.

Furthermore, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission periodically reviews existing military bases to determine their current viability, as well as future sustainability to accomplish the military’s mission. Natural gas is a cost effective infrastructure to underpin the current operations of the Joint Base. A transmission line within a military base is a unique feature, which provides the basis to support growth for future operations. The SRL would be a favorable infrastructure foundation to allow the Joint Base to grow.

By supporting this major driver of the economy, and jobs in Ocean and Burlington counties, the SRL will provide tangible benefits to the entire region.
