Payment Assistance Programs

Trouble Paying Your Energy Bills? Help is Available.

At New Jersey Natural Gas, we believe no one should have to choose between heating their home and meeting other basic necessities. We’re here to help.

Stop by one our upcoming Energy Assistance Days and find out which programs you qualify for! We'll be on hand to answer questions and offer personal assistance with the application process. View dates and locations.

If you’re worried about a shut-off notice or have lost service, don’t wait. Give us a call, and we’ll let you know if you’re eligible for a payment arrangement. 

The below energy assistance programs are implemented through state-designated Community Action Partnership (CAP) agencies. Find the CAP agency nearest you, or call Infoline at NJ 2-1-1.

Energy Assistance Programs

Limited Income Home Energy Assistance Program

The Limited Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program that delivers short-term aid to help eligible low-income households pay their energy bills, and helps restore service in the event of a shutoff. If heat is included in your rent, you may still qualify. Applications are accepted October 1.

Universal Service Fund

The Universal Service Fund is a state program administered by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs designed to help make energy bills more affordable for eligible low-income households — providing credits to monthly natural gas bills.

Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric 

The state-funded Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric grant helps low- to moderate-income households that do not qualify for other assistance program pay their energy bills. Customers may be eligible for a one-time grant toward both their natural gas and electricity bills within a 12-month period.

New Jersey Lifeline Credit Program 

New Jersey Lifeline Credit Program is administered by the state Department of Health and Senior Services and provides income-eligible seniors and adults over 18 who receive Social Security Disability an annual combined credit of $112.50 for both their natural gas and electricity bills. The credit is applied directly to the utility account.

Have you been disconnected or received a disconnection notice? Nonprofit NJ SHARES provides a safety net for households with a one-time grant to help them meet the financial burden of energy expenses. The grant is available to those who do not qualify for other assistance programs and have a history of good faith payments with their utility companies.

Gift of Warmth

Established by NJNG, the Gift of Warmth fund provides a one-time grant up to $500 to help income-eligible households, as well as those experiencing temporary or unanticipated financial hardship, reconnect or continue their natural gas service.

New Jersey Comfort Partners 

New Jersey Comfort Partners is a free home energy improvement and education program offered by the state for qualified low-income households. In partnership with NJNG, certified contractors will install free cost-effective energy-saving measures in your home to help lower energy bills —on a home-specific basis.

We offer Helpful Notification Services, allowing you to designate a third party (friend, relative or social service agency) to receive a duplicate copy of any discontinuance notice for nonpayment of your bill. This third party is under no obligation to pay. You can apply for this service by contacting our Customer Services department.
