Start Service

To set up a new NJNG account and turn on natural gas service, please notify Customer Services at 800-221-0051 (Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at least 10 business days before you move in.

Appointments are scheduled in the order they are received. While we do our best to accommodate requests, we can’t guarantee your preferred date and time will be available. 

When you call, it is important to have the following information ready:

  • date requested 
  • time requested (specify a.m. or p.m. preference only) 
  • your daytime and evening phone numbers 

If natural gas service has been turned off, we will need access to your home or business. For safety reasons, our trained technician must light all readied natural gas appliances to confirm natural gas is properly flowing to your equipment and there are no leaks. Note someone over the age of 18 must be available to provide our employee entry.

Please note, the following MUST take place BEFORE we arrive to turn on your service. (For more details, see an explanation in English or Spanish.) 

  • The electricity and water services are turned on, and your house is not winterized.
  • At least one natural gas appliance is ready to be turned on. 
  • The natural gas valves are shut off for appliances that are not ready to be turned on.
  • Natural gas pipes are capped off where appliances are missing.
  • The natural gas meter is connected to the house line, with no open fuel lines.

A security deposit is required for new NJNG customers or those who have not previously maintained a satisfactory payment history with us.* First-time residential customers can provide a credit reference from their former natural gas or electric utility to waive deposit requirements. Acceptable utility credit references must not be older than one year and show an on-time payment history. A security deposit is required for first-time commercial customers. Former NJNG customers must satisfy any outstanding balance before service can be activated.

A $15 "account opening" charge will appear on your first bill after the natural gas service is turned on. We may request a security deposit if satisfactory credit has not been established. Each month your bill will include a customer charge for service-related costs, such as bill processing and customer service, even if no actual natural gas is used. Commercial accounts may have additional associated fees.


*The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has determined that, for the twelve-month period beginning January 1, 2019, the simple interest rate of 1.87 percent shall be applied to customer deposits received or held by New Jersey public utilities.
